About Us

Jason and Kelly Cameron

Jason and Kelly were married in Sept. of 2005, in Homer, AK.  Today they enjoy sharing Kachemak Kennels.   Outside of the Kennel Jason works full time as a carpenter.  "I do love my work, and it's rewarding to me because I love to see people in a comfortable shelter that I helped to create."  To Jason it is important to feel that he is helping others, not just trying to get ahead of them.   Jason's building area slows down drastically in the winter season.  "When January comes around the work starts to diminish,  I need to keep busy for my peace of mind-----the dogs make it possible for me to get outside all winter".  Kelly also has a job in Homer working with Community Mental Health.  Her department gives her work in the school system, which of course gives her more time in the Kennel during summers and holidays.

Kachemak Kennels

In 1998  Jason found his calling when arriving to Alaska.  When he met Lorraine Temple she was operating Outback Kachemak Dogsled Tours.  Jason started giving rides to the guests.  In fact, he was running the dogs all day and night with or without guests.  Lorraine, alaskahuskyspirit.com, who now does school presentations in the Western US, started a glacier operation in the summer outside of Seward, AK.   Jason was hired as a musher and worked his way up to operations MNGT, managing a camp in Seward and Juneau.  When the company expanded, Kachemak Kennels which included Jason, Kelly and their 50 dogs went to Juneau to work on the Herbert Glacier for the summer.  "We've seen a lot-----working with crews that have been stuck up on the glacier all summer with only a helicopter or a 20hr death defying excursion by foot to get to town.  It's an entirely different challenge living in those conditions and providing the highlight of many tourist's Alaskan vacations."

Dog Handlers 2007-8

"We couldn't make it possible without the help our Kennel receives.  We've come across some of the best help that we've seen here this season."

Jody Shaw

Last spring we needed help while we were getting ready for the summer glacier season.  Jody found us on a sled dog ad on the internet.  She took a chance and came to help Kelly with the dogs in Homer, while Jason was in Juneau getting glacier camp ready.   Jody loves being involved with a large kennel operation.  She wants to be occupied all day, right in the dog yard.  Not only did she keep up with all of the chores and give the appropriate attention to the dogs, she improved the special needs (dog meds, ect..) that some of the dogs required.  Check out Jody's blog: prohandler.blogspot.com

Blake Dietrich

Blake and Jason met when the dog truck battery died.  Jason asked for a jump start.  Blake helped and has been helping since.  Now Kachemak Kennels is discovering that they have found a person that is naturally motivated to conform to the lifestyle.  We all look forward to sharing the adventures of dog mushing this season!
